Does the world really need a refrigerated beach?

I’ve just read this (Pipes cool Dubai beach so toffs don’t burn feet) in The Sun.
Has the world gone mad? Is it April’s fool day? Am I missing something?
OK, so they built an indoor ski slope. That I can live with. It’s quirky, and I guess there’s not much snow out there anyway. But underground pipes to cool the beach down?
For a start, there’s the carbon footprint issue. Dubai’s is already looking like something out of Jurassic Park, but there’s more to it than this. It’s called sanity.
What’s next, a giant air conditioning unit, set to maximum, to be flown above the city, suspended by golden air ballon ships?
I just don’t get it. These “ultra-luxury” customer-types are demanding, I’m sure, but I’d like to see the actual proof where a guest has written a comment. Would it have been something like this:
Q “How could your stay with us be further improved?”
A “Walking to the beach, I experienced a burning sensation on the bottom of my feet.”
If you prefer not to wear flip flops, then I’m afraid this will happen. There are worse things that can happen. And secondly – it’s part of the fun. Sprinting to find a bit of a shade as you walk back from the bar, or running excitedly, like a child, to the sea, that’s
what the beach is all about it (sometimes).
By building these cooling pipes, something will be lost forever. Who’s idea was this?
Hats off to The Sun sub-editors though for the headline: Costa del Sole. Nice.
And please comment if you agree with me…
There’s no question about it – this is totally crazy. It adds nothing, it sucks up electricity, and it probably won’t work anyway.
It’s too hot in Dubai to even be on the beach (flip flop or no flip flops) so the only creatures it will benefit are the lizards – who I am sure are not too happy about it.
