HNY, shopping, and resolutions

December 31, 2008

Happy New Year from Paris!

Been a couple of days now, staying in the beautiful St Paul/Marais area, and a further extension in the presence of millions of French people.

Staying in London over Christmas, I was dumbfounded by the number of French hitting the shops on Oxford St, and around Covent Garden.

So now I’m continuing that theme, wandering around Rue de Rivoli.

Good to see so many people travelling to London, and spending their money, as the UK needs it right now.

The atmosphere is a lot less depressed here in Paris, the headlines aren’t the same, as job cuts are less severe. The French are more cautious in their spending, and mortgages are also stricter.

For the Brits though, it’s horrifying – things are a lot more expensive. Even without the exchange rate, you can notice the increase in everyday goods/food.

This is going to have a huge impact on tourism, as this report (Strong euro hits holiday plans) shows. How tour operators will react remains to be seen, but January will be crunch time, as this is the period when most summer holidays are booked.

This blog may take a couple of days off to recover from the festivities – so stay tuned, more to come in 2009.
