OMG The Huffington Post has a travel section. Is this as good as online travel journalism gets?

A new venture in the form of a travel section from online magazine (or curator/aggregator?) The Huffington Post.

Hopefully this won’t sound like I’m in favour of “dumbing down” but this, I’m afraid, is probably the way online travel journalism is heading.

Celebrity? Check. Competition? Check. Crazy stuff? Check. 10 of the best etc? Check.

Plus it’s colourful, loads of blogs, and very short, catchy headlines.

However, scroll down through the reams of colourful boxes, just screaming for you to click on them, and you’ll see this headline:

OMG! New Kids On The Block To Host Another Carnival Cruise

This is bad. Please don’t make me read this. But The Huffington Post seems to me the ideal website format, structurally at least. Also note their Twitter version of the magazine.

Also note the name: The Huffington Post. It sounds so old-fashioned and traditional, perhaps that’s another clever web trick?

Don’t get your hopes up too high. As is documented elsewhere on the web, the Huffington Post isn’t paying for travel contributions. And, remarkably, it has a no freebies policy as well…

Yeah it is a bit of a shocker, but the news isn’t all bad. Over the weekend I stumbled across NakedHungryTraveller ( and it is just about everything the HuffPo isn’t. No idea if they pay tho, nor what their business model is. Worth a look
